Providing a Barber’s chair for a living
Velu, a Barber by profession, runs a small shop at Mettupalayam Village near Poonamallee. He has been using an ordinary chair for his clients to come and sit for a haircut and shave. His clients were only those males in the village who were already less in numbers and now even that started declining as the chair he was providing to the customers was uncomfortable for them during haircut. Moreover, since this chair was short in height and not a rotatable type he started developing pain on his back.
His earnings were only hand to mouth and as the chair cost around Rs.20,000/- he was not able to purchase on his own. Therefore, he approached Udavum Karangal through his friend requesting to provide a barber’s chair for his shop. One of the Social Worker of Udavum Karangal Mr. Ganesh visited his shop and came to know about his family condition. He has a small family of two children studying in Govt. School and living in a rented house at Thiruverkadu.
We all know Barber chairs are designed to be comfortable for the client and to make the barber’s job easier. The chairs usually have adjustable height which we can also rotate, or lean backwards. The barber chair dates back to the 19th century when it became an essential part of the barber shop prior to the invention of specialized barber chairs.
Now that Velu has been given a well-made Barber’s chair, he is full of confidence that he can get back all his lost customers and can now show all his skills of hair cutting to earn for a better living.
