PROBUS CLUB OF CHENNAI CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE ELDERLY
The Probus Club of Chennai, a prominent senior citizens’ association, jointly with The Russian House (Russian Centre of Science and Culture), celebrated the International Day of the Elderly at the Russian Cultural Centre, Alwarpet, Chennai.
The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Probus Club President, Probian M. Annadhurai, who emphasized the importance of active ageing and the value of continued contribution by senior citizens to society.
Dr. T. S. Sridhar, IAS (Retd.), Former Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring address highlighting the role of elders as pillars of wisdom, experience, and moral strength in every community.
The Probus Recognition Awards were presented to distinguished personalities for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields:
- Kalaimamani Ervadi S. Rathakrishnan
- Kalaimamani Dr. D. K. S. Kalaivanan
- Probian K. Ranga Ramanujam
The Probus Award of Excellence was conferred upon Seva Ratna Dr. V. Santhanam, noted social activist, for over five decades of exemplary service to the community.
Mr. Alexander Dodo, Vice Consul and Director of the Russian House, attended as the Guest of Honour and lauded the long-standing friendship between the Russian House and the Probus Club. Rotarian Prasanna Rajagopalan, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Madras, also addressed the gathering and appreciated the Club’s initiatives in promoting healthy and purposeful ageing.
The celebration also featured the presentation of mementos to senior members who had reached milestone ages of 75, 80, and 90 years, and to Probians who had completed 50 years of marital life—a gesture of gratitude and respect for their enduring contributions.
A special highlight of the event was the release of the Club’s 32nd Annual Book, titled “The Probus Way of Vibrant Ageing.” The publication, reflecting the creativity and life experiences of senior members, is available for purchase at Rs.120 plus postage. Winners of the recent Senior Citizens’ Sports and Games Competitions were also honored with prizes during the function. Over a hundred senior citizens participated enthusiastically in the event and were later treated to a delicious Breakfast and lunch.
The program concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks proposed by Joint Secretary, Probian S. Sappani Pillai, marking the end of a memorable celebration that truly embodied the spirit of dignity, joy, and fellowship among elders.
