An irregular period is not the only sign of Ovarian cancer – beware of 10 other symptoms

Ovary forms the main part of female reproductive system. It is situated on either side of the uterus and is responsible for production of eggs and hormones like estrogen and progesterone. As a part of ovulation process the ovaries release an egg and prepares pregnancy. The unfertilized egg will be release or shed through vagina which is called menstruation. Long irregular menstrual cycle may convey a women’s risk for ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth major reason for cancer death among women. The unfortunate thing is that many cases of ovarian cancer are unnoticed for a long period and treating it becomes more difficult at severe / last stage detection. The abnormal cells developed in the ovaries are unnoticed as it is considered as commonplace symptoms and everyday ailments of getting older. These cells grow to form a tumor which impacts the egg release from ovaries and shedding of unfertilized eggs through vagina.

Most times these tumors are benign. Less commonly ovarian tumors cause abnormal vaginal bleeding or missed periods; however, it is unlikely to be the only symptom. Let us go further to see the other signs of ovarian cancer that every woman and their well-wishers should be aware of to protect them from the fifth largest reason for women’s death.




 

  1. Pain in abdomen or pelvis – This pain may also be caused by gas, indigestion and cramps. Consistent pain or discomfort in abdomen or pelvis area that persists for more than two weeks should also be considered as a sign for ovary cancer and a doctor examination is must.
  2. Heartburn – Heartburn because of spicy food, alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages has become common now. If you experience sudden heartburn with no alterations in diet or weight gain or diagnosis of hernia than it should be consulted with an expert immediately.
  3. Constipation – Like heartburn, constipation is also caused by many reasons including medication, dehydration and/or less fibrous diet. But be aware that constipation also signals ovarian cancer and needs to be checked out.
  4. Swelling – Does your abdomen or legs looks like swollen for no reason? Persistent bloating in the abdomen that cannot be explained with reasons? Then this may be an indication of ovarian cancer and you should be checked out by a doctor
  5. Abnormal bleeding – Most the patients diagnosed with the disease experienced irregular bleeding between periods. Few have experienced heavy bleeding or bleeding during sex. Any women having irregular bleeding or women who have undergone menopause spotted any bleeding should be evaluated with pap test for ovarian cancer
  6. Frequent urinating – As we get older frequent urges to urinate becomes common as we get older, especially among diabetics. If you feel the need to constantly use bathroom or feel bladder pressure or if there is any change in urinating frequency, then it should be examined by the doctor.
  7. Inflammation or skin rash – An uncommon inflammatory disease that cause itching and painful rash on the face, eyelids, back, knees, elbows and chest may also be a sign of ovarian cancer. This is frequently accompanied with muscle weakness.
  8. Pain during sex – Pain during intercourse is called as dyspareunia. The vaginal pain while having sex may also because of less lubrication, vaginal infection, spasm, inflammation, menopause, and others. But if the pain continues for longer period, then it is advisable to visit a doctor.
  9. Loss of appetite or feeling full always – Feeling full stomach is because of heavy meal or due to gastritis. If you are not feeling hungry or feeling constantly full, then consult your doctor as it may be another sign of ovarian cancer.
  10. Back pain – This symptom is often ignored as it is related to bone or spine. But back pain particularly in the lower back may indicates ovarian cancer.

Though long or irregular periods are because of various reasons, it may also tell you about your ovary health. While most irregular period may not lead to cancer, it is better for a woman to see her healthcare provider if she is very much concerned about her irregular period. Regular health check-ups and frequent discussion with your gynecologist help to protect you from various health conditions and fosters early detection and treatment.
