Handing over 40 thatched roof houses by Ramakrishna Mission

Ramakrishna Mission Students Home, Mylapore, Provided 40 thatched houses and a Community Hall to 40 homeless Irula Tribal families.

The Tamil Nadu government provided free plots to 40 Irula tribal families in Aalapakkam village of Madurantakam taluk of Chengalpattu district for building houses. However, these Irula families were very backward and could not build houses as they were without any economic means shelter, or essential facilities.






Ramakrishna Mission Chennai Student Home immediately carried out the necessary field work and started construction of 40 thatched roof houses with cement floors and 3 feet walls. Also, these 40 families were provided with all the necessities of a family like a bore well for drinking water and other needs, solar- lamps, clothes, cooking utensils, stoves, mats, pillows, and groceries. Above all, a large Community Hall named “Sahodari Nivedithai Community Hall” was constructed and evening classes for children were started immediately.

The cost of this project is Rs 25 lakhs. In this, headquarters at Belur Math contributed Rs.8 lakhs. Former students and other well-wishers donated the remaining amount of Rs 17 lakh.
