Sister S. Jayalakshmi the Village Health Nurse attached to the vellanur Village ( Next to Avadi) won great laurels, recognitions, and awards for her tireless and dedicated service to Covid-19 victims during the peak of the first and second waves of the pandemic.
Nurse Jayalakshmi had in a most thoughtful gesture started the ‘Mother and Child Whatsapp group’ to facilitate continuous communication and counseling on medication, hygiene, social distancing, nutrition, etc to Covid-affected patients during the peak of the lockdown when physical movement was strictly restricted. It called for great effort and initiative to educate the rural women and familiarize them with the usage of this social media platform to receive and send critical messages pertaining to the prevention and care of Corona. After the threat of Covid receded to the background Sister Jayalakshmi realized that this constant interaction, knowledge and awareness dissemination, and updating to the local womenfolk, mainly expectant mothers and those who have just delivered, could continue to be put to great use in terms of sending regular alerts on date/ time/venue of various immunity dosages for the newborn, Covid booster shots, nutrition during pregnancy and after delivery, baby care, yoga for safe and painless delivery, the importance of breastfeeding, RCHID Card and its importance, etc through videos made by her.
Sister Jayalakshmi also updates her ‘Child and mother group’ with the latest healthcare news in regional news and Govt of Tamilnadu`s Health dept – Health related guidelines through online flyers and posters etc.
Sister Jayalakshmi has always been a favorite of the locals, the beloved nurse Amma, Sister, Jeya Akka to the rural community living in and around Vellanur and other villages surrounding Avadi, and this most thoughtful initiative has made her all the more popular with them and has also won high praise from NGOs, Health Department and the public at large.
