Covid Vaccination and health camp for Spinal Cord injury patients

HAMSA Brain and Spine Rehabilitation Centre organizes free health camp

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-altering experience not only for the person affected but for everyone around them. This leaves them completely paralyzed or bed-bound and depended on others. India is the capital for road accidents, Spinal Cord Injury, Head Injury, and Trauma. Spinal cord and brain injury are the worst types of injury anyone can suffer.

In line with Spinal Cord Injury Day which is observed globally every year on 5th September, HAMSA Brain and Spine rehabilitation center, a unit of Kauvery Hospital Chennai, is organizing a free health camp and Covid vaccination for those affected by Spinal Cord Injuries.

The camp is organized to take care of the health and complications related to Spinal Cord Injured people by offering them free COVID vaccination and free Health checkups at the centre. The health check will include consultation by Rehab Doctor, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Psychologist, Dietitian and Nurses along with an Ultrasound of the kidney and blood tests where required. They will also have access to a wide range of therapies on their visit.

During the COVID phase, people with Spinal Cord Injury have not been able to access the health care facility for several reasons. One of the main primary reasons is their immune status and their preponderance to develop any infections is higher compared to a normal person. Secondly, their regular doctors were consulting only online and Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists were not visiting patients for regular therapy. Thirdly, lack of public transportation has been a challenge for differently-abled persons and most of them have not been vaccinated. “These people were either reluctant to go to Hospitals or had no means to travel. And hence patients with Spinal cord Injury during the COVID 19 have been significantly suffering from various complications including pain, infection, bedsores, COVID-related problems, and other complications. Several patients and their families are also not vaccinated,” says Dr. G Balamurali, Head of Department Spine Surgery Kauvery Hospital Chennai and Managing Director of HAMSA Rehab.

Date of Health Camp – Sep 4th and 5th 2021 (Saturday and Sunday)

Venue – HAMSA Spine and Brain Rehab center is located at 18, Besant Road, Royapettah, Chennai 600014
