Thuvakkam with Greater Chennai Corporation Carried Out “Chennaiyil Vanam” (Urban Forestry in Chennai) under Miyawaki Method of Tree plantation.
A non-governmental organization, Thuvakkam in association with Greater Chennai Corporation started out Project “Chennaiyil Vanam” – Miyawaki tree plantation drive event on Saturday 1st August, 2020 07:30 AM at Blooming Garden, Mugalivakkam, Chennai.
The “Chennai Vanam” is a green initiative started to restore the greenery back in our Chennai City. With growing population and technology people tend to forget the most essential necessities of life. Pure air, clean oxygen to breath is a vital need for every human being on earth. Creating forest gives more benefits than what meets the eye socially and environmentally.
Considering the benefits and the need of the hour Greater Chennai Corporation and Thuvakkam together started out the Project. The inaugural day, 1st August 2020 was commenced by Dr. Alby John IAS, Regional Deputy Commissioner – South, GCC.
At Blooming Garden around 15,000 square feet of land, more than 2000 saplings of 32 different species have planted.
Tree saplings for this Chennaiyil Vanam were procured with the support of L&T Constructions, Cognizant Outreach and CNSI and the Corporation has arranged water facility and other requirements for the maintenance of the Forest.
Already two such forests have been created by Greater Chennai Corporation at Kotturpuram and Ramapuram, where Thuvakkam have created 15 such forests across Tamil Nadu.
Miyawaki afforestation is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, that helps to create a dense forest in a small area. The growth in this methodology is 10x times faster and 30x times denser.
