“MANGA HOKUSAI MANGA” EXHIBITION AND JAPANESE MUSIC
In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations, the Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai, The Japan Foundation, and ABK-AOTS Dosokai, Tamilnadu Centre presents the traveling exhibition, “MANGA HOKUSAI MANGA” from 16th October to 28th October 2022 open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (24th October closed) at Lalit Kala Akademi (No.4, Greams Road, Chennai 600 006).
Japanese Manga, in contemporary times, finds fandom and appreciation across the globe. This art form of pictorial storytelling has evolved over the years in Japan and one artist who has made an immense contribution in this field is Katsushika Hokusai. An entire school of art in himself, Hokusai has a special collection of about 4,000 images in some 800 pages, published in 15 volumes to his credit, popularly known as ‘Hokusai Manga’.
The exhibition allows you to take a closer look at the work of Hokusai and his influences on modern-day manga artists, with images from all fifteen volumes on display. You can see how Hokusai’s subjects change as he draws almost everything he can think of.
The exhibition also features exclusive original works by seven current manga artists such as Shiriagari Kotobuki, Yokoyama Yuichi, Nishijima Daisuke, Igarashi Daisuke, Okadaya Tetuzoh, Ichikawa Haruka, and KYO Machiko. It also features work by different manga artists from different
periods such as Uagawa Kuniyoshi, Oei (Hokusai’s daughter), Sugiura Hinako, Sakura Sawa, Okadaya Tetuzoh, Saeki Konosuke, and Kamimura Kazuo among others are also on display.
Mr. TAGA Masayuki, Consul General of Japan in Chennai will inaugurate the Exhibition on Saturday, 15 October at 4:00 p.m. Violin and Irish harp duo performance will be followed by young Japanese musicians Ms. KOIZUMI Nami and Ms. TAGA Sakura at 4:30 pm. Japanese nostalgic and recent pop music will be played. The exhibition is ENTRY FREE and open to all.
