Tamil Nadu Police issues the following guidelines for youngsters who seek job opportunities in Southeast Asian countries.
In recent times, many youngsters from India in the age group of 20 to 24 have been attracted to Southeast countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand on the promise of lucrative job opportunities. They either come across the job offer through online advertisements or through Illegal Recruitment Agents. These youngsters are recruited on the pretext of legitimate employment opportunities such as Data Entry Operator or similar roles. However, upon arrival, they are forced into cyber slavery and made to participate in illegal cyber activities, such as cheating people by creating fake social media profiles, FedEx scams, and engaging in fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals.
The Tamil Nadu Police is closely monitoring the modus operandi of the Illegal Recruitment Agents. Two cases registered in connection with this cyber slavery in Salem District, Thammampatti PS Cr. No.139/2024 u/s 420, 368, 371, 120(B) IPC in which two illegal recruitment agents were arrested, and Greater Chennai City Police, CCB – II, Cr. No.77/2024 u/s 419, 420, 468, 471 &120B IPC and Sec 4 & 20 of The
Indian Telegraph Act 1885 in which nine accused were arrested, have been transferred to CBCID for a holistic investigation of these scams.
In this regard, Tamil Nadu Police issues the following guidelines for youngsters who seek job opportunities in Southeast Asian countries.
- Thoroughly verify the nature of the job and the profile of the agent by approaching the Protector of Emigrants.
- Only registered agents are authorized to send persons overseas
- One should travel only on the strength of employment or work visa. Tourist visas should only be used for the purpose of tourism.
- Any advertisements in regional newspapers regarding job offers in Southeast Asian countries should be reported to the local Police for verification of their genuineness.
