Rotary Madras Central Prahlad Rai Saraogi Bone Bank was inaugurated in Cancer Institute (WIA) Adyar, Chennai by Rtn.Kamal Sanghvi (Rotary International Director Elect) in the presence of Rtn.Babu Peram (Rotary District Governor – RI 3232 Chennai), Past District Governor Rtn.SVRM Ramanathan (popularly known as Abhirami Ramanathan), Rtn.Saranyan (President, Rotary Club of Madras Central) and other Rotarians , Doctors & officials from Cancer Institute (WIA) Adyar.
This is built with a cost of USD 100000 (approximately Rs.80 Lakhs) by Rotary Club of Madras Central through Rotary International Global Grant Program. Dr.Chandra Kumar (Orthopedic Oncologist) of Cancer Institute (WIA) will be the Head of Bone Bank. He has undergone special training in Singapore & South Korea to carry out Bone Bank operations. This would be “India’s Largest Bone Bank” ever built and pride for Tamilnadu. The first Bone Bank is in Mumbai built by Tata Memorial Hospital and 2nd was M.S.Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru.
Rotary Club of Madras Central had approached Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar to do a good project through Rotary which benefits patients. When discussed with Dr.V.Shanta, Chairman of Cancer Institute who said a Bone Bank is very much required but not present in the Hospital. The club has shown interest and built the largest bone bank ever in India at a cost of US$1,00,000. Dr.Chandra Kumar (Orthopedic Oncologist) who heads the Bone Bank were sent to Singapore & South Korea for training & certification to handle Bone Bank operations. Sri Prahlad Rai Saraogi has been one of the most significant contributor to the Rotary Foundation through RC Madras Central, and this Bone Bank is named after him as it is built with the support of Global grant from Rotary Foundation. This Bone Bank is expected to help over a thousand people annually.
Advantages of Bone bank – able to offer Allograft bone ready for use in the patients, which is a natural solution, No limitation to the number or size of bone. It can be tailored intra-operatively to match size of the defect, the cost is 5 to 10 times cheaper compared to the metal prosthesis. Additional use of Bone Bank – Spine, Hip & Knee surgery, Malignant bone & Maxillofacial lesions and Trauma.
