The Udavum Karangal, a forty two year old, non-profit NGO in Tamil Nadu, strives to help the underprivileged by giving them meaningful education, good health and to the destitute a dignity of life by rescuing, rehabilitating and reuniting he/she to their respective family.
On 15th October 2025, a mentally-ill person was referred to Udavum Karangal by T17 Police station, Perumbakkam, Chennai. According to the Sub-Inspector, the mentally-ill person was roaming naked and was violent so the police referred him to Udavum Karangal and immediately our social worker Mr. Jacob and Mr. Shahnawaz was deputed and along with our team, they reached the spot and the mentally-ill person was rescued and brought to our Home for further management. He was given sumptuous food followed by a shave and bath and also good clothes to wear. Later part of the day a thorough medical check-up was also conducted by a physician to assess his health and provide necessary treatment.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao (9940188012) a senior social worker of Udavum Karangal while counseling got his name as Harish Chandar, aged 38 yrs. When we further enquired about his native, he was unable to answer but later he came up with a name of a village called Daurukhor in Uttar Pradesh. Immediately Mr. Srinivasa Rao contacted the Panchayat president with the help of Google. Then the president provided us with the Harish neighbor’s contact details. His name is Mr. Jeet Bahadur (9962313451). To our surprise Mr. Jeet was working in Chennai OMR. We contacted him and informed about Harish. Mr. Jeet was very happy to hear the whereabouts of Harish. Mr. Jeet gave us the contact details of Harish elder brother (Mr. Ram Chandar) and wife (Mrs. Ranjana). When Mr. Srinivasa Rao and Mr. Shahnawaz contacted them they shared some information about Harish that he was working in OMR Chennai in a tiles and marbles shop for a year. On 12th October 2025 he went missing. Harish was mentally ill from the age of twenty six and was undergoing treatment in their native. For employment he came to Chennai.

The family members requested to restore Mr. Harish to Mr. Jeet because they are unable to come to Chennai and on 16th October 2025 Mr. Harish Chandar was restored to Mr. Jeet Bahadur in the presence of Mr. S. Vidyaakar Social worker and Founder Udavum Karangal.
Mr. Harish Chandar was given free medicines for a month and was advised to follow up the given medicines; his family and Mr. Jeet was educated about the nature of the disease and the importance of periodical check-up. They promised to take care of him. Finally they thanked Mr. Vidyaakar Founder Udavum Karangal and the organization for their humble work.
